![]() ![]() While not a groundbreaking story, it did keep me interested throughout the length of the book, and it was an interesting take on the classic Cinderella story we’ve already heard so many times. ![]() In her attempts to save her sister she is caught up in a political plot involving the evil Lunar Queen, the dreamy Prince and of course Cinder herself. Earth is ravaged by a plague, a plague that eventually is caught by her one non robot friend, her caring step sister, sentencing her to a slow and painful death. She is abused by her step mom and treated like a slave due to her legal standing. Her life is a bleak one, her only companion a small defective robot. ![]() Cinder, the titular character, is a gifted mechanic and cyborg living in New Beijing far in the future. A fresh and enjoyable take on a classic story, Marissa Meyer writes an intriguing and gripping remake of Cinderella. ![]() ![]() ![]() I’ve never read anything exactly like The Last Lavender Sister, but I’d love to. It both pushes and pulls you towards one of the healthiest and most earned happily ever afters I’ve experienced. It is a novel that will demand you feel, not just joy, but the entirety of the emotive spectrum. ![]() Never lacking is all the wittiness, kindness, and hope so characteristic of Brayden’s work, The Last Lavender Sister showcases the most mature and cerebral version of Brayden’s creative genius to date. In fact, much about this novel feels like a classic historical romance: a bluestocking wallflower coming into her own, a dashing Heyerian Mark II heroine coming into town and being undone by our wallflower, upsetting their worlds, and setting them off on a years-long journey to find themselves and love. The Last Lavender Sister is a deeply ambitious romance novel, harkening back to the sweeping romantic sagas of old while being thoroughly modern in tone and voice. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But, Drucker says, very few people actually know-let alone take advantage of-their fundamental strengths. It may seem obvious that people achieve results by doing what they are good at and by working in ways that fit their abilities. And we have to stay mentally alert and engaged during a 50-year working life, which means knowing how and when to change the work we do. We have to place ourselves where we can make the greatest contribution to our organizations and communities. What does that mean? As Peter Drucker tells us in this seminal article first published in 1999, it means we have to learn to develop ourselves. Today we must all learn to manage ourselves. Throughout history, people had little need to manage their careers-they were born into their stations in life or, in the recent past, they relied on their companies to chart their career paths. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We had a madman in the White House then, and an even madder one now. I can’t help but think of the historic parallels. The speakers included senators like George McGovern and famous activists like Coretta Scott King but the music by Peter, Paul, and Mary, Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger and the cast of Hair is what everyone listened to. The sheer brawn required to organize the two moratoriums in an age before cell phones and the web was nothing short of heroic. Thousands took to the streets, traveled the country, organized, gave speeches, and disrupted their everyday lives for many years to stop a war that they believed was unjust. Life magazine described it as “the largest expression of public dissent ever seen in this country.” America was on a cliff’s edge of a revolution. The Moratorium March on Washington came a month after the October 15 Peace Moratorium when 2 million people in cities and towns across the country took the day off to recite the names of the war dead, hold teach-ins and vigils, and march. ![]() ![]() ![]() London's Perfect Scoundrel ("Lessons in Love" series), Avon Books (New York, NY), 2003.Įngland's Perfect Hero ("Lessons in Love" series), Avon Books (New York, NY), 2004.
